Working the Porcelain Surface → artassociation.org

The Art Association in Jackson Hole, Wyoming is hosting a workshop with the focus of decorating and making utilitarian pots.  Emerging artists Emily Free Wilson and Bobby Free will share their methods of surface enhancement using underglazes, slips, and other techniques for embellishing the porcelain pot. Techniques will include slip-trailing, scrafito, wax resist, carving, and inlay. Participants will have the opportunity to work on pots in various stages: leather hard, bone dry and bisque.

Hi Emily, I just about fell over when I saw your cups/tea bowls! How do you obtain such fine crisp lines?

Thanks so much!  To get the line quality I’m looking for I use a tool called a slip trailer.  It’s a small bottle with a needle connected to it-that I can push underglaze through.  I place the pot on a lazy susan so that I can spin the piece at whatever speed I need to get the design I have in mind.  I have a few images of using one while decorating mugs. Check them out here: http://www.facebook.com/album.php?id=732706472&aid=284359

Thanks for asking!
